JOIN US at Circular City Snapshots: A Decarbonized & Equitable Transition at Scale

The current climate change emergency, once-in-a-lifetime policy shifts, systemic inequalities, and a rapidly growing global population are causing many to consider the limitations of the current take-make-waste economic platform. Circular solutions already exist that can help cities rapidly decarbonize in an equitable context – they only lack the regulatory environment to incentivize an authentic human transition. This session with the Circular City Coalition focuses on how cities can integrate and incentivize decarbonization, equity, and economic development under one framework and help steward a new economic paradigm that prioritizes the lives and livelihoods of its citizens and the natural environment over excess and waste. What do successful cooperatives have in common with steadfast climate initiatives? The answer lies in how closely aligned they are with the needs of the communities they most directly impact. This panel session is an opportunity to explore the scope of the role – often unnoticed – that cooperatives across all sectors play in the world. As we grapple with a climate emergency and scores of related challenges, co-ops and other community-owned businesses offer a potential pathway to lead an equitable, regenerative transition away from our current extractive economy – and through that unlock humanity’s best version of itself. The panelists will share stories of the successes and challenges of the cooperatives movement, and discuss ways that investment can drive global inclusivity and equity, better serve people in communities, contribute solutions to the world’s most pressing problems, and advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
